When visitors first think of Folsom, often images of the famous prison and Johnny Cash’s hit song Folsom Prison Blues come to mind. The City of Folsom and the California State Prison have had a long-standing relationship ever since Johnny Cash’s famous concert at the prison in 1968. With the 50th Anniversary of Cash’s concert this January, the Gallery at 48 Natoma (which is located in the Folsom Civic Center, just neighboring the prison) is featuring a very special exhibit beginning November 17, 2017. “Teaching Art Inside” will feature paintings and prints by former correctional art instructor James Carlson and artwork by incarcerated artists from the Arts-In-Corrections Program at the California State Prison, Sacramento (New Folsom Prison). The exhibit will be open to the public through January 18, 2018.

For over 30 years, newly retired art instructor, James Carlson, taught visual arts and facilitated an instructional multi-disciplinary fine arts program for the Department of Corrections in California. His work brought him inside the state and federal prison system teaching artistic skills and techniques at several institutions including Pelican Bay and Folsom State Prisons. His resourcefulness in teaching high-level art techniques with limited supplies, dwindling budgets and difficult and often hazardous surroundings is nothing less than inspiring. The art collection is surprising in that the images are of such high artistic caliber, which attests to the exceptional technical instruction taught by Mr. Carlson.

The collection has approximately 50 pieces (13 are from currently incarcerated student’s work), 40 pieces from past inmates and several works by Mr. Carlson , an accomplished artist himself. In 2015, a selection of the incarcerated student’s work was exhibited for over six months at Washington State University to much acclaim. A special bonus display will include a selection of Johnny Cash memorabilia from the John R. Cash Revocable Trust in the exhibit.

In the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma, over 100 photographs in the 11th Annual Folsom Focus Photography Contest, sponsored by the Folsom Arts Association, will be on display from November 9, 2017 to January 16, 2018. This year’s categories include: Macro, How I See It, Did You See That, Cell Phone Photography and Scenes and Architectural Elements, in both youth and adult age groups. Prizes will be announced at the opening reception.

The public is invited to celebrate both exhibits at the free opening reception on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00, with refreshments, wine and live guitar music by Gabe Becker. An additional treat the evening of the opening reception will feature a special Holiday Fine Art Sale with artists from the Art Center displaying and selling craft items just in time for gift-giving!

The Gallery at 48 Natoma is managed by the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department and showcases art by regional and national professional artists, area museum collections and traveling exhibitions; offering high quality original art exhibits to the community that otherwise may not be experienced in this area.

The gallery is free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9-5, with additional hours Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm and Second Saturdays of each month form 9-1. Free tours can be arranged by appointment.
