"Local Color: Stories of our Members” new exhibit at Gallery at 48 Natoma

January 26, 2018 to March 10, 2018

Opening Reception - Friday, January 26, 2018, 6:00-8:00pm

Hours are Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, with additional hours Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6-8pm and monthly Second Saturday hours, 9:00am-1:00pm.

The Gallery at 48 Natoma starts out the New Year with an outstanding exhibit of art quilts of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) in an exciting bi-coastal fiber exchange in January 2018. SAQA is an international, worldwide resource for information on the art quilt and the artists who create them. SAQA is dedicated to bringing beautiful, thought-provoking, cutting-edge artwork to venues across the United States and around the world.

Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now has over 3,000 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors. A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organization vibrant, dynamic and progressive.
This exhibit, Local Color: Stories of Our Members, is a testament to the power of Studio Art Quilt Associates: to promote the art quilt and build a community of fiber artists. The Connecticut regional representatives reached through the SAQA community to the Northern California/Nevada representatives inviting them to join in Local Color. The first venue was held at the Slater Memorial Museum from mid-June to mid-September 2017. The second venue will be in Northern California at the Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom, California.

The focus of the coordinated exhibit is Local Color: Stories of Our Members – recent, innovative works that celebrate the personal stories and narratives of each region’s members. The theme can be broadly interpreted from personal stories to regional history to literary references and beyond. The pieces may include both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional or freestanding art.

The Northern California/Northern Nevada Region (NorCANV) of SAQA covers a huge territory, from the Pacific Ocean into the high deserts of Nevada, encompassing the northern part of each state. They have approximately 290 members with many talented artists making 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work. This exhibit contains 60 works, half from Connecticut and half from NorCANV artists. While each region’s show will be separately curated and juried, all art quilts will be shown together. Curators for the NorCANV show included Jennifer Landau, Mirka Knaster, and Kathy Grady. Connecticut curators were Kate Themel and Diane Wright.

The exhibit opens on Friday, January 26 and continues through March 10, 2018.

In the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma, local artists form the Folsom Arts Association will be on display from January 19 to March 1, 2018.

The public is invited to celebrate both exhibits at the free openingreception on Friday, January 26 from 6:00 to 8:00, with refreshments, wine and live jazz guitar music by Peter Morgan.

The Gallery at 48 Natoma is managed by the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department and showcases art by regional and national professional artists, area museum collections and traveling exhibitions; offering high quality original art exhibits to the community that otherwise may not be experienced in this area. More information is available at folsom.ca.us, the Galleryat 48 Natoma.

The gallery is free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, with additional hours Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm and Second Saturdays of each month from 9am-1pm.
