Caring for animals is a fun, rewarding and sometimes messy job! Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary Jr. Zookeeper Camp is a hands-on “what it’s like to care for animals” experience. From making enrichments for animals, participating in animal handling, and lending a hand to clean an exhibit, you’ll learn how zookeepers care for the animals!Ages 8-11
Each week of camp includes different activities! Join us for multiple weeks to enhance your camp experience.Weekly Curriculum: each morning includes zoo keeping tasks like cleaning exhibits and hiding enrichment while the animals are locked safely in their dens. When we finish, you’ll experience the fun of watching the animals enjoy their special treats, could be blown eggs filled with treats for the macaques or giving the squirrel monkeys boxes with hidden treats. Afternoon activities: we’ll relocate to our open air new barn*, for a barnyard experience. The new barn will be home to several animals such as a horse, goats and miniature donkeys. There they can engage in hands-on activities and create enrichment projects like making giant frozen ice pops, handmade piñatas, and special puzzles for the animals. Campers will engage in animal themed arts, crafts and games. Campers will also get the opportunity to meet some of the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary’s outreach animals, which may include: ferrets, skunk, tortoise, hedgehog, chicken, snakes and insects. Camps often include a visit from a special guest, ranging from veterinarians, to wildlife care volunteers, to officers from Folsom Police Department K-9 unit. Each week has a different theme and focus; for example “Predators vs. Prey week”, where campers will clean carnivore and herbivore exhibits, create enrichment for tigers, foxes and ravens or dissect owl pellets. Another week’s theme, “Our Wild Neighbors”, includes cleaning the exhibits of the bears and mountain lions; making enrichment for the raccoons, skunks and bobcats; and activities such as building bird houses or going on nature walks. Just as with the real behind-the scenes daily life at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, camp activities are subject to change based on the needs of animals, weather conditions, and other factors. *If barn is unavailable, camp will be held in the classroom. If you liked Junior Zookeeper Camp, you love Senior Zookeeper Camp. Take what you’ve leaned to the next level. In this advanced camp you will enjoy learning more about many of the same animals at a higher level and some you might not have experienced before. Making advanced enrichment toys for the animals, cleaning enclosures, preparing diets and interacting with the animals. Campers can learn about animal training, animal health and care, outside conservation efforts and environmental stewardship. Learn why the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary’s Mission “Teaching Responsible Behavior Towards All Animals” is important. *If barn is unavailable, camp will be held in the classroom.
